Before you head out
Safety & Outdoor Risk
Park hopping happens outdoors, in real weather, in real parks. Here is what to know before you go — and why no stamp is ever worth pushing through unsafe conditions.
Taking part is your choice
Participation in LMGT Park Hopper is voluntary. Outdoor recreation involves inherent risks. Participants are responsible for their own safety, supervision of minors in their care, transportation, physical readiness, compliance with park rules and decisions regarding whether conditions are safe for participation.
You know your body, your group and your day better than any app does. Skip a quest, shorten a walk, sit in the shade, or come back another Saturday. Nothing in Park Hopper expires on you.
You decide what is safe for you and your group. Follow posted park rules, closures and staff instructions. Children stay with a responsible adult. Never enter closed or restricted areas to finish a quest.
South Florida weather
Check current weather and park conditions before starting. South Florida weather changes quickly — no stamp, XP or badge is worth continuing in unsafe conditions.
Heat and humidity build fast. Bring more water than you think you need, wear a hat and sunscreen, and plan the biggest walking for early morning or late afternoon.
Lightning is the one thing there is no judgement call about: if you hear thunder, get inside a building or a hard-topped vehicle and wait it out. Boardwalks, open fields, water and picnic shelters are not shelter.
Afternoon storms, standing water, slick boardwalks and sudden wind can all turn a calm trail. If the sky changes, turn around — the park will still be there.
What is out there
- Water: canals, lakes, lagoons and the ocean. There is often no lifeguard. Only swim where swimming is allowed and supervised.
- Wildlife: alligators, snakes, raccoons and birds all live here. Keep your distance, never feed anything, and keep children and pets away from water edges.
- Insects and plants: mosquitoes, ticks, fire ants, poison ivy and Brazilian pepper. Repellent, closed shoes and staying on the trail handle most of it.
- Ground and traffic: roots, sand, uneven boardwalk, bikes on shared paths, and park roads with cars. Look up from your phone before you step.
- Being alone: tell someone where you are going, keep your phone charged, and note the nearest park entrance or ranger station when you arrive.
Children and anyone in your care
Children take part under an adult's account and must stay with a responsible adult the whole time. Water, parking lots and wildlife are the three places to keep them closest.
If you are supervising someone with mobility, sensory or health needs, choose the paved and boardwalk routes and check the park's accessibility notes before you drive out.
Outdoor safety
LMGT Park Hopper encourages outdoor exploration, but participants are responsible for determining whether an activity, park, trail, weather condition or physical activity is appropriate for them and members of their group.
Participants should follow all posted park rules, closures, warnings and instructions from park personnel.
Use appropriate caution around traffic, water, wildlife, uneven terrain, heat, storms and other outdoor hazards.
Children must be supervised by a responsible adult.
Never enter restricted, closed or unsafe areas to complete a quest.
No LMGT quest should require trespassing, climbing prohibited structures, disturbing wildlife, removing natural resources or violating park rules.
Safety always takes priority over completing a quest.
The park always outranks the quest
Park rules and safety instructions always take priority over an LMGT quest, challenge, XP, badge, stamp or reward.
If a trail is closed, a sign says no, a gate is locked, or park staff tell you something — that is the answer. Take the photo somewhere else, answer the discovery question from the visitor centre, or ask us to approve your park by hand. No quest is worth breaking a rule for.
If something goes wrong
In an emergency, call 911 first. Then tell park staff where you are — most parks have numbered markers, entrances or shelters that help responders find you.
Once everyone is safe, let us know so we can sort out your park, your stamp or anything else. That part can always wait.
If a quest, question or park detail in the app looks unsafe, out of date or wrong, report it through the Questions page and we will fix it.
Health and wellbeing
LMGT Park Hopper provides recreational and general wellness activities and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Participants should choose activities appropriate for their individual abilities and circumstances.
